News Release: Peterbilt introduces all-electric garbage truck

May 9, 2018
Peterbilt is displaying a Model 520 refuse truck demo with an advanced battery-electric drive system at the WasteExpo 2017 show in New Orleans, LA from May 8-11.

The Model 520 is equipped with the Transpower ElecTruckTM drive system, which uses high-power electric motors, inverters and batteries to power commercial trucks weighing as much as 80,000 lb.

The variant of the TransPower ElecTruck system developed for the refuse truck uses a 300 kilowatt-hour battery pack to enable an urban refuse truck to operate for up to 65 miles or eight hours on a single charge. The ElecTruck system also features a 70 kilowatt onboard battery charger that can fully charge the truck’s lithium-ion battery pack in two-four hours.

sevenminutesolar: While consumer electric vehicles get all the attention in consumer media, there is a big revolution just starting to take place in the commercial vehicle trucking world. Tesla provided the big news, as usual, with the announcement of its Tesla Semi. Then Anheuser-Busch announced it would purchase 800 hydrogen long haul trucks from the Nikola motor company.

But there are difficulties having all electric trucks on long haul routes – most associated with range and charging facilities. For that reason, vehicles like garbage trucks that cover short distances and do similar routes all the time, are ripe for the electric revolution. Other examples of adoption for urban work vehicles are the growing use of electric buses in China and North America and the new sci-fi looking UPS delivery vans debuting in London and Paris.

This article and Pros and Cons infographic from something called the North American Council for Freight Efficiency seems to indicate that the foreseeable future will see the introduction of electric trucks for some uses, but the continuation of fossil fuel engines where they better fit the practical needs and economics of trucking.
